Well, we are cementing the ideas of reactions vs responses, negative vs positive self talk; how much effect our emotions have on our entire day and our attitude. The scenarios we have looked at are really minor, yet, each one can ruin an entire day if you don't find a positive way to respond. How about some really major life circumstances? Just how the heck do you find the silver lining, make lemonade and look at the bright side of:

  • Your basement getting flooded.
  • Having a serious vehicle accident.
  • Losing a loved one.
  • Being diagnosed with a serious illness.
All of these will test even the most positive, strong people we know. All of these will produce a highly emotional reaction. All of these can be handled in a positive way. I'm not saying that any one of us will skip down the road singing joy-joy-joy after being diagnosed with cancer. I'm saying that we can turn a devastating situation into one that is manageable. I'm saying you can find a more positive approach. Because, developing all of this positive response, all these positive thinking skills comes down to adjusting our attitude!

Attitude: a state of mind, a feeling, your disposition. Once again, your emotional reaction and response to a given situation. Keep thinking about this. Keep practicing:
  1. Take a deep breath.
  2. Remind yourself that your emotions are influencing your response.
  3. Start to develop a plan on the best way to improve the circumstance.
Diverting yourself away from the emotion by focusing on the task.
  4. Take another deep breath; check your attitude, blood pressure and language.
  5. Put your plan into action.
  6. Is this situation so awful that the world has stopped spinning?
Frequently, coming up with a worse case scenario than the one you're in makes the current one seem trivial.
  7. Get on with your day, never give up, Develop your positive Attitude!
Working to find a better state of mind, feeling, disposition; finding a more positive attitude will assist you to manage every situation in your life.

Busy reading all your posts here. I was away for the weekend doing Kennywood one last time before the end of the season.

So, I have to admit that I am the kind of person who first lets out with some negative words (sometimes in three different languages) when something minor occurs. What is strange is that, when something really bad happens, something kicks in, and I find myself trying to find a solution to the issue immediately. Then I get to work to fix it if it can be fixed. Not sure why I react more positively when bad things happen.

You have an important key, your self awareness. Like you, I too find that I kick it into high gear when the stakes are high. Knowing this is great; I'm not spending too much time on why.
