Squeaking Wheels

I don't particularly enjoy pestering service providers. If you have agreed to provide a service or deliver equipment, I am naive enough to believe you will follow through. It doesn't seem to work that way. Organizations don't want to get moving unless you keep calling and pushing.

Of course, my favorite line recently was "I'm very sorry, we've had your cushion here. Somehow, you got lost in the cracks." Can't help wondering which crack they were referring to.

Squeaky wheels get results, but, does it have to be like  this? Kinda feeling like the hamster on the wheel.........

Looking Ahead.......

Well, 2015 is over and I'm glad. The kinda year that if something could go wrong, it did. Fighting infections, getting sick from the infection treatments, moving to a new environment, losing abilities, skin breakdown, and equipment problems are just a few of the highlights.

Of course, being Mr. Crankypants is not the state of mind I need to be able to present a more positive outlook. I was even hesitant about my first paragraph, but, reality; it is what it is.

Happy New Year and many blessings to all of you. Let's just give it our best shot today.

Seeing the Bottom

As we continue to stay on track to buy the new house and deal with all the paper work and coordinating inspectors, appraisals, etc; it is still difficult emotionally to come to accept that all the planning, hassle and expense are due to my predicted loss of function and loss of independence. I am now able to  see the bottom on long slide down. It has taken 23 years to get here which has been a blessing. However, while I feel good that our plan is taking shape and we're doing what needs to be done, being scared, frustrated and anxious all come with it. Of course, today I'm doin' ok. That is most important issue, take care of today doing the best you can on your long slide down...

A Hoyer Lift

1/7/2015

Not everyone is familiar with the lift system I mentioned in my last post. The Hoyer Lift enables a care giver to lift a person from a bed, wheelchair, floor, where ever. Once safely up, the caregiver can then push the person in the lift to the shower, bed, chair, where ever and then safely deposit that person where they need / want to be.

Like It or Not...

There are plenty of times when your disability dictates what you will do and when you will do it. We are currently beginning to look for a new home. The down side is that we see the impending time coming that I will lose my ability to be independent  in the bathroom for showering, toileting, etc. This will require the use of a lift system, probably a Hoyer lift, to get  me where I need to be to get done what needs to  be done. That means a major bathroom renovation must be completed to enable the use of the lift. So, instead of trying to do that in our current home, we will purchase a new home, do the renovation, then move on in.

Like it or not, here  we go...

Parking Issue, Still

Just  had to do a quick post. Not neglecting my duties, just have higher priorities this month.

Note that the car is possibly a person with a disability parked in the proper spot. Just not  paying attention. This illustrates how much room a van with a ramp REALLY needs...

New 'Handicapped' Symbol

An effort to adopt a more in-motion symbol for accessibility is gaining traction with New York requiring all new signage in the state to utilize the “Accessible Icon.” (Accessible Icon Project)

A revamped version of the blue and white icon that’s long symbolized accessibility everywhere from parking lots to restrooms will soon be commonplace in more communities.

Under a bill signed late last week, New York will be come the first state to require all new and replacement signage used to signify accessibility for people with disabilities to include a more active, in-motion image of a person using a wheelchair.

The state will also change the terminology on such signs, employing the word “accessible” instead of “handicapped.”

The shift is about more than aesthetics, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in signing the legislation.

“This bill is an important step toward correcting society’s understanding of accessibility and eliminating a stigma,” Cuomo said.

New York City and a smattering of other localities, businesses and schools have already agreed to adopt the revamped symbol, known as the “Accessible Icon,” which first gained momentum through a grassroots effort in Boston.

What’s more, the icon is currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City as part of an exhibit of culturally-relevant designs developed in recent decades.
